Driving licence class Automatic + manual entitlement

Take your test in an automatic, still drive manual cars

The best of both worlds

B197 combines the advantages of training in an automatic with an unrestricted licence for manual cars. You learn and take your test stress-free in an automatic – after a short training course, full manual entitlement is added to your licence.

More relaxed learning

Without clutch and gears you can focus fully on the traffic – often leading to faster progress.

Full flexibility

Despite taking your test in an automatic, you may drive any manual car.*

Often fewer driving lessons

No moving off with the clutch or changing gears – many learners are test-ready sooner.

Ready for the future

Automatic is the standard for electric cars.

Your path to B197

  1. Basic training in an automatic

Practical training and special lessons (country road / motorway / night) in a modern automatic car.

  2. Manual gearbox training

At least 10 driving lessons of 45 minutes each in a manual car.

  3. Test drive

15 minutes with your driving instructor – you show that you can handle a manual gearbox.

  4. Test in an automatic

You take the practical test in the automatic car you already know.

Prices are the same as for class B; the manual entitlement certificate is included in the basic fee – apart from the regular driving lessons there are no extra costs.

Frequently asked questions

What does code 197 mean?

It is entered on your licence and certifies that you may drive manual cars even though you took your test in an automatic.

Is B197 valid abroad?

Yes – throughout the EU and in most other countries you may drive manual cars wherever the normal class B licence is recognised.*

How is it different from code 78?

With B78 you are permanently restricted to automatic cars. B197 removes this restriction.

* Before driving outside the EU, please check whether code 197 is recognised in that country for driving manual cars.
